Campus life FAQs

1. What kind of clubs and organizations are available?

K-State has more than 450 student organizations to choose from, so you have plenty of choices. Be sure to go to the Activities Carnival during the first week of school. All of the organizations will be there, and you’ll get information about groups and activities for the semester.

2. Do I have to live on campus?

You don’t have to live on campus, but 90 percent of incoming freshmen choose some sort of organized living (residence halls, scholarship houses, or Greek houses). It’s a great way to get to know other students and get connected to K-State.

3. Can I have a car at K-State?

You don’t need a car, but you can bring one. Because our campus is compact, you can walk from one end of campus to the other in 10 minutes. So if you live in one of K-State’s nine residence halls (all on campus), you’ll have no problem getting to class on time without a car. If you want to bring your car, you can purchase a parking permit during orientation.

4. Can I work my freshman year?

Many students have part-time jobs, even as freshmen. K-State makes getting a part-time job easy. There’s a job fair at the K-State Student Union during the first week of classes. Campus departments and local businesses will be there looking to hire students. Last year K-State had a $14 million student payroll, and the minimum campus wage is $7.25 an hour.

5. Where can I go to study on campus?

K-State’s main library, Hale Library, is open every day and includes a 24-hour study room, complete with Internet access and vending (and coffee) machines. Separate libraries are available for architecture, engineering, math and physics, veterinary medicine, and K-State at Salina students. Each residence hall also offers study rooms, and some offer academic cluster floors.

6. Are there places to eat on campus besides the dining halls?

The Union Food Court offers several restaurants, sushi, and a soup and salad bar. You can also get K-State-made ice cream at Call Hall, and coffee shops are sprinkled across campus, including Caribou Coffee in the Union, Bookend Café in Hale Library and Café Q in the engineering complex. Each dining hall also offers Quik Cats for quick snacks, and Derby’s THE Bakery sells baked goods.

7. Is there a place to do my banking on campus?

There is a full-service branch of Commerce Bank in the Union, and several banks have ATMs located in the Union.

8. How do I get athletics tickets?

Students can buy tickets through www.kstatesports.com. Printable tickets will be e-mailed to your Webmail account.

9. Can I still play sports at K-State?

You can probably play even more at K-State than you did in high school. We’ve got 16 varsity teams, 20+ club sports, and dozens of non-competitive sports clubs. If you didn’t come to K-State on an athletics scholarship, you can still try out for varsity sports, or you can keep playing competitively through club sports, which play against teams from other colleges. The Rec Complex is also open daily.
