Applying for housing
1. How do I get a housing application and housing contract packet?
As soon as you have been officially admitted, you automatically receive a residence hall application card and a brochure with information about on-campus housing. This process begins in late fall and continues throughout the year as people are admitted to K-State.
You can always complete the application online. When we get your residence hall application card and nonrefundable fee, we’ll send you a residence hall contract packet. It will include information about residence halls and the process for you to indicate your roommate, decide on your residence hall, and select a meal plan.

2. When will the housing contract packets be mailed?
If you turned in the $30 nonrefundable application fee before December, we’ll mail you the Housing and Dining Services contract packet during the first part of December. If you turned in your application fee during or after December, the contract packet will be mailed within two weeks.
3. When will I get my hall and roommate assignments?
Your hall and roommate assignment letter will be mailed the first week in July.
4. What if I decide to live off-campus at the last minute?
If you decide not to live on campus, you have until June 1 to let us know. If you sent in a contract payment, we will send it back to you if you let us know by June 1. After June 1 and prior to the official opening date of the residence halls, there is a $200 cancelation fee.
Note: After the halls officially open, additional cancelation fees may exist. Refer to your residence hall contract for more details.
Residence halls
5. Which residence hall is the best or nicest?
K-State residence halls offer a variety of living options. Although we offer similar services in all halls, each hall has a unique personality. The best way to decide is to visit and see which hall fits you best. You can tour any residence hall by dropping in at the front desk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday except during scheduled university breaks. Not all residence halls are available for tours during the summer.
6. Will I get the hall I requested?
Assignments for incoming students are made on a first-come, first-serve basis. The earlier you return your Housing and Dining Services contract packet and payment, the better your chances of getting your hall preference.
7. Which halls have suites?
There’s suite-style living in Ford (female), Boyd (female), Goodnow (coed), Haymaker (coed), Marlatt (male), Putnam (coed), Van Zile (coed), and West (coed). Ford and Van Zile are suite-only residence halls and have the largest number of suites available for incoming students. Assignments for incoming students are made on a first-come, first-serve basis.
8. Is there Internet access in the residence halls?
An appropriately configured computer will give you access to the K-State network by either wired or wireless means. Details regarding the sign-up process for the ResNet ethernet connection will be mailed by the end of July. An ethernet connection allows e-mail, Internet, and network access, as well as laser printing for a nominal fee. Computer labs are available in all halls and the academic resource centers in Derby and Kramer dining centers.
9. Is there parking near the residence halls?
Each hall has its own parking lot. Parking permits are awarded on a student-determined point system based on your class standing, age, credit hours, hall leadership, and involvement. There’s also a general lot (B2) available for any residence hall student to park in.
Dining info
10. Do you have dining facilities?
Each of the three residence hall complexes has its own dining center. You can eat in either Derby or Kramer no matter which hall you live in. Unless you are a resident of the Strong Complex, you must have special permission to eat in Van Zile.
11. What types of meal plans do you offer?
You can choose 10, 15, or 20 meals per week. The 20-meal plan is the best value, even if you don’t eat all 20.

Roommates
12. Can I request a roommate?
You can choose your roommate by writing his or her name and Social Security number on the roommate preference page of the Housing and Dining Services assignment information form in the contract packet. Be sure your intended roommate writes your name and Social Security number on his or her paperwork, too.
13. I’m going potluck. How will you pick a roommate for me?
We’ll ask you to fill out a roommate preference questionnaire to help us match you up. It will include questions about your study habits, sleeping patterns, smoking preference, and more.
What to bring
14. What comes with the room?
You’ll have an extra-long twin bed, mattress and pad, desk and chair, storage drawers, closet space, window blinds, and wastebasket.
15. What should I bring?
Some popular items include mini-fridges, coffee pots, and microwaves.
16. Do I need to bring a computer? Which kind?
You don’t have to have your own computer, but many students do. If you decide not to bring one, you can use the computer labs located in every residence hall, Derby and Kramer Academic Resource Centers, and other locations on campus.

17. Do I need to bring a telephone?
Yes, we encourage you to bring a telephone for your room. Campus telephone service and the 911 feature are provided as part of your hall contract. You are responsible for providing your own telephone, and this is the primary method for faculty/staff to contact you.
In emergency situations, Reverse 911 through the KSU Police Department allows campus police to contact all residence hall rooms and is provided at no additional charge. Each room has a live telephone jack restricted to campus and 911 calls. The telephone number is provided on the wall jack.
If you would like local Manhattan service from your assigned residence hall room you'll need to sign up with K-State Computing and Telecommunications Services for a $5 monthly charge. Local service will allow you to call off campus within the Manhattan area and receive calls from anywhere in the world. With the local service you can use any long-distance calling card.
