Res hall redo: Make a duct tape chair

Want to add a little pizzazz to your room? Try turning an old chair (not one from the residence hall lobby) into a masterpiece with just a few strips of duct tape.

Get this

  • Thrift store chair
    Duct tape
    Scissors
    Plastic comb
    Patience

Do this

  • 1. Shop for a wood- or metal-framed chair with padded vinyl seat and/or back. Ripped upholstery is perfect—and cheaper!
    2. Cover the pad with strips of tape. Always overlap the strips by about 1/2 inch. Use scissors to keep the ends of each strip neat.
    3. When you’ve finished, rub down the tape edges with the back of the plastic comb. This will keep them from peeling up later.

Why it’s cool

It’s a cool conversation piece. It’s sturdy enough to survive college shenanigans, and it’s got enough flair to be an exhibit in an art museum. Experiment with different colors and widths of tape—or lay the tape strips in different patterns—to discover the perfect look for your room.
