Food Writing
Always wanted to have your own food-related blog but didn’t know where to start? Start here with a feature, restaurant listing, review, or food memoir in the Kansas Food Journal. This webzine, an ongoing class project, is devoted to food production, preparation, and consumption. It's the only webzine of its kind in Kansas and one of the first class-produced sites at K-State.
Matrix Studio: Professional Business Practices
If your knowledge of advertising and graphic design comes from watching "Bewitched"—where every ad idea succeeds thanks to the twitch of a magical nose—get ready for a reality check. This class operates just like a professional agency: you work with real campus clients and design everything from logos to complete campaigns. If the client chooses your design, you even get paid!
Golf Course Design
Transform a 500-acre site in Florida into a well-designed golfing haven. Or create a resort with tennis, swimming, horse stables, and condos. Maybe you’ll work with Tiger Woods or Vijay Singh after graduation. Former graduates have!
Interior Design Studios
Tackle real design problems: You might design the sets for a TV station, draw up plans for a hotel, or transform a small room into offices for three people.
Metalsmithing and Jewelry
Make your mother sterling silver candleholders or give your dad a new brass belt buckle in this hands-on metal fabrication course. Other student projects include metal grasshopper statues, sushi servers, flip-flops, and of course jewelry.
Fourth-year Architecture Studios
Pump new life into a Kansas ghost town with your imaginative designs. Past students have built park pavilions, community history displays, and even a collapsible bus stop. It’s an exercise in creativity when your budget is pretty much non-existent.
Research and Development of Food Products
Between Go-Gurt; cherry or vanilla (or both) soda flavoring; and the multitude of Atkins-friendly foods, it’s not hard to see why America’s supermarkets are overflowing with new foods. Use your knowledge and creativity to tap in on the profits as you market and develop products—and even design the packaging—for treats like chocolate cherry muffins or frozen cookie dough.
