university HONORS program

Want to study hot topics? Tackle several disciplines at once? Conduct original research? If so, K-State’s university honors program may be right for you.

You'll take special classes, work with K-State's top professors, and study with other students who want to excel. And rather than just working with people in your major, you'll interact with students from all the colleges at K-State.

Meet honors students

Benefits

  • Work closely with exceptional faculty members.
  • Enjoy smaller honors and upper-level classes.
  • Meet and collaborate with other dedicated students.
  • Earn a mark of distinction that sets you apart in job and graduate school applications.

Honors projects

During your junior and senior years you’ll be challenged to tie your interests and experiences together with an honors project or thesis. You’ll get to write up results from a scientific experiment, pen a major research paper, or produce your own creative work.

You can study whatever interests you—from genetics to the impact of breast cancer on families. Here are a few examples:

  • Examine the negative effects of action figures on males.
  • Research the bridal industry to design your own line of bridal wear.
  • Use computer animation in animal physiology.
  • Monitor the social impact of casinos.
  • Set up a marketing plan for a kids' cooking show.
  • Explore factors that help teen-age moms become better parents.
  • Analyze credit card usage among college students.
  • Perform a case study on a Midwestern nursing facility.
  • Study "fool" characters in Shakespeare plays.
  • Experiment with anti-cancer compounds.
  • Write novels or plays.
  • Analyze gender bias in high school textbooks.
  • Learn African culture through costume.
  • Study the relationship between oil flow control and food machinery.

Classes

How are honors classes different?

Let us count the ways:

  • They often tackle several subjects at once (for example, the economics of environmental chemistry).
  • There's less busy work and more discussion.
  • They often include field trips and guest speakers.
  • They take broad approaches to hot topics (such as Islam's relationship to the West).
  • They're taught by K-State's strongest professors, including many winners of the university's top teaching awards.

What classes can I take?

Classes vary every semester, but here are some interesting topics that have been taught in previous years:

  • Oceanography
  • Love, Sex, and History: The Greeks, the Victorians, and Us
  • Public Policy Issues
  • Memory and the Brain
  • Shakespeare, Gender, and Performance
  • Fiction Into Film
