Agricultural economics and agribusiness
Agribusiness provides food and fiber to the nation and to the world. It reaches from the farm input supply industries to food marketing and from your community to the world. Our programs contribute to the competitiveness of Kansas agribusiness and to improving business and economic systems around the world. Enjoy free popcorn from the ag economics and agribusiness club. Waters Hall.
Agricultural education
Activities include playing an interactive game to learn fun agricultural facts, growing a plant from existing plant parts, and propagating your own plant to take home. You can also participate in our “field of dreams” by making your own plastic from cornstarch. Enjoy popcorn. Bluemont and Waters halls.
Agricultural communications and journalism
The Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow are waiting to serve you warm, fluffy pancakes and savory sausage! Tickets may be purchased at the pancake feed. Enter to win fabulous door prizes. 142 Seaton Hall.
Agricultural technology management
See how ATM students apply technology to the agricultural world. Kids can participate in the pedal tractor pull and see the quarter-scale tractor team (six-time national champions). Look for farm equipment across campus. Participate in GPS and parallel tracking demonstrations and drop by the dealership management club to learn about opportunities with John Deere. 142 Seaton Hall and Waters lawn.
Agronomy
From the field to the table, agronomy sustains the world’s food supply and environmental quality. The food you eat, the clothes you wear, and the fuel that powers your car are all produced from Kansas crops. Come learn how many loaves of bread come from a bushel of wheat, gallons of oil from a bushel of soybeans, or gallons of ethanol from a bushel of corn. Try a gluten-free sorghum cookie and learn about Kansas weather patterns. Find out who grew the biggest soybean plant as we judge results of the Willie and the Beanstalk contest. Southeast entrance to Throckmorton Hall.
Animal science and industry/food science
Come see displays and demonstrations from all areas of animal and food science. The poultry science club will provide information about poultry husbandry as well as perform intriguing egg candling demonstrations.
Visit the ruminant nutrition booth for a close-up view of live microorganisms from the stomach of a cow. Sample K-State cheeses to learn more about the world’s greatest manufacturing plant—the dairy cow—at the dairy science club exhibit. Meats, cheese, and ice cream will also be on sale. First floors of Call and Weber halls and the lawn between the buildings.
Attend the Little American Royal, where students compete for scholarships while preparing for competition in dairy, beef, swine, horse, and sheep showmanship. Weber Arena.
Entomology
Insects: friend or foe? Visit the insect zoo for an up-close and personal look at insects and how they affect our lives. Enjoy the vibrant displays of beetles and butterflies, see the world’s largest tarantula and other arthropods, get pumped for the exciting cockroach races, and sample our tasty insect cuisine. Insect zoo at university gardens.
Guaranteed admission: The zoo’s popularity has grown, but its space has not, so get an advance ticket to guarantee your spot. Call 785-532-2123 for free tickets, or visit www.k-state.edu/butterfly for info about visiting during Open House (or on a different day). Walk-ins will be admitted as space allows.
Food science
See food science in action: witness the eruption of a soda pop geyser! See the microorganisms that make food tasty, examine how pH affects food color, and join in a sensory taste test. Observe how food packaging improves food quality, and encounter other exciting food phenomena.
Grain science
The grain science club will give tours of the flour mill with special displays. No other university in the world offers degrees in milling science, bakery science, and feed science. Discuss the curriculum and your opportunities in the grain science industry. Come see the flour mill, bakery, and feed mill facilities. Shellenberger Hall.
Bakery science students will provide tours of the baking science teaching lab with demonstrations of bread baking. Free samples are available! Let the feed science club show you what its program is all about. Novel feed ingredients will be on display. Watch pellet mill demonstrations, and refresh yourself with free soft drinks and coffee. Shellenberger Hall.
Tour the new grain science complex on Kimball Avenue. Tour the International Grains Program and the Bioprocessing and Industrial Value-Added Program (BIVAP) buildings to see various bio-based industrial and food products and demonstrations of snack-food production on pilot-scale equipment. Shuttles run every half hour from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. from Shellenberger Hall.
Horticulture, forestry, and recreation resources
Visit an early spring garden as you stroll through the horticulture club’s landscape display (indoors), and learn about the many opportunities in the world of horticulture. Connect with this area of agriculture by learning how plants and people grow well together. The horticultural therapy chapter will show children how plants affect all of their senses. Parents can purchase plants grown by students at the plant sale. Throckmorton Hall.
The Kansas State University Gardens, a must-see sight, offers tours from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. While you are there, take advantage of the daylily sale from 1 to 3 p.m. University gardens.
Plant pathology and genetics
Learn about microorganisms that cause diseases in food crops. Graduate students will provide displays and interactive demonstrations to illustrate the global impact of these diverse organisms on the human experience. Come see how nematodes, fungi, bacteria, and viruses affect the food you eat! Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center.
Sigma Alpha
Learn more about the wide world of agriculture in Kansas with interactive activities for kids and adults. Check out the K-State-themed basket you could win! Waters Hall.
