Department displays
Agricultural economics and agribusiness
Agribusiness provides food and fiber to the world through industries in your community and around the globe. Our programs contribute to the competitiveness of Kansas agribusiness and improve business and economic systems. Hang out with the ag economics and agribusiness club. Waters Hall lawn.
Agricultural education
Learn about agriculture by completing a scavenger hunt of the College of Agriculture. Be one of the first 300 participants to complete the scavenger hunt and receive a free College of Agriculture T-shirt. Waters Hall lawn.
Agricultural communications and journalism
The Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow is waiting to serve you warm, fluffy pancakes and savory sausage. Tickets may be purchased from ACT members or at the pancake feed. 142 Seaton Hall.
Agricultural technology management
See how students apply technology to agriculture. See the quarter-scale tractor team (six-time national champions), and look for farm equipment across campus. Participate in GPS and parallel tracking demonstrations to learn how this technology influences agriculture. Drop by the agricultural technology management club display to learn about club events and activities, such as the ATM lawnmower clinic. 142 Seaton Hall.
Agronomy
From the field to the table, agronomy sustains the world’s food supply and environmental quality. Food, clothes, and fuel are all produced from Kansas crops. Learn how many pizzas come from a bushel of wheat, how much oil is produced from a bushel of soybeans, and how many gallons of ethanol from a bushel of corn. Try a gluten-free sorghum cookie, and learn about Kansas weather patterns. See the biggest soybean plant as we judge results of the Willie and the Beanstalk contest. 1023 Throckmorton Hall.
Animal science and industry
See displays and demonstrations. The poultry club will have an educational exhibit about poultry production with baby chicks on display. Visit the ruminant nutrition booth for a view of live microorganisms from the stomach of a cow. Sample K-State cheeses to learn more about the dairy cow at the dairy science club exhibit. Buy K-State meats, cheeses, and ice cream. The dairy science club is hosting the Southwest Dairy Farmers mobile classroom display, featuring milking demonstrations. Call Hall, first floor and the lawn south of Call Hall.
Little American Royal at 12:30 p.m. Students vie for scholarships while preparing for competition in dairy, beef, swine, horse, and sheep showmanship. Weber Arena.
Entomology
Insects: friend or foe? Visit the insect zoo for an up-close and personal look at insects and how they affect our lives. Enjoy displays of arthropods, see examples of the world’s largest tarantula, watch cockroach races, and sample tasty insect cuisine. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Glenn Beck Dairy Barn, university gardens.
Food science
See food science in action: witness the eruption of a soda pop geyser in front of Call Hall. See the microorganisms that make food tasty. Examine how pH affects food color, and participate in a sensory taste test. Observe how food packaging improves food quality. 156 Call Hall.
Grain science
The milling science club will give tours of the flour mill with special displays. No other university offers degrees in milling science, bakery science, and feed science. Discuss the curriculum and industry opportunities. Come see the flour mill, bakery, and feed mill. Tailgate and cookout from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Hal Ross Flour Mill.
Bakery science students will provide tours of the baking science teaching lab with demonstrations of French bread and pretzel baking. Free samples. Let the feed science club show you what its program is all about. Novel feed ingredients will be on display. Watch pellet mill demonstrations. Free soft drinks and coffee. Shellenberger Hall.
Tour the Hal Ross Flour Mill and the Bioprocessing and Industrial Value-Added Program buildings to see bio-based industrial and food products and demonstrations of snack-food production on pilot-scale equipment. Heart-healthy snacks will be extruded at BIVAP. Shuttles run every half hour from Shellenberger Hall.
Horticulture, forestry, and recreation resources
The horticulture therapy club will show children how plants affect the senses, and parents can purchase student-grown plants. See Smokey Bear and check out the new parks and wildlife management club in the main lobby of the southeast entrance. Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center.
Horticulture club students at the K-State Gardens will show you opportunities in horticulture. Learn about proper tree care, and watch a climbing demonstration. Bring photos of your yard, and horticultural students will teach you how to improve your outdoor environment. Purchase student-grown bedding plants at the horticulture club sale or daylily divisions from the garden collection. K-State Gardens.
Plant pathology
Learn about microorganisms that cause diseases in food crops. Plant pathology graduate students will provide displays and interactive demonstrations to illustrate the global impact of these diverse organisms on humans. See how nematodes, fungi, bacteria, and viruses affect food you eat. Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center.
