How to meet people in your residence hall

It can be a little scary to move into a new place with a bunch of people you don't know. But hiding in your room for the whole semester is no way to live up your college years. You'll have much more fun if you get to know your neighbors.

Keep your door open

It’s a lot more inviting to walk through an open door than to knock on a closed one. When some new neighbors peek in the door, invite them in! This is especially important during your first few days at the res halls. Leaving your door open lets people know that visitors are welcome in your room. It can also help establish your room as the wing hangout.

Get a couch

Sometimes your room won’t even seem big enough for two, much less a crowd of wingmates, but a couch is a simple solution. It provides extra seating and makes your living space less awkward for visitors. After all, some people won’t feel comfortable sitting on your bed. Collapsible chairs or bean-bag chairs are other great options.

Keep a bowl of candy

Everyone knows that candy equates instant popularity. You don’t have to feed your wing a gourmet meal, but a bowl of Hershey kisses can be very welcoming. After all, who doesn’t love chocolate?

Get a message board

When you go to class, leave a note saying when you’ll be back. This way, if a neighbor has some juicy gossip to share, she’ll know right when to find you. Or if the guys went to grab a pizza, you can meet up with them. A message board can keep you in the loop even when you’re not around.
