Your Mom was Greek, your brother was Greek, and now you’re thinking of following the family tradition, but where do you start? Here are the answers to some of the most common questions about Greek recruitment.

What are some of the social events for Greek students?

Some of the biggest Greek community events are Greek Week, a series of events that culminate with a fun Olympics; Homecoming, which features float building, a spirit contest, and more; and Greek 101, a series of workshops on topics ranging from diversity to substance abuse. Individual chapters have their own social traditions: barn parties, formal dances, date dashes, senior trips, and more.

What are the grade requirements?

To join a sorority, a 2.9 high school GPA for incoming freshmen, and a 2.5 cumulative GPA for upperclassmen are recommended. Requirements for entrance into a fraternity are determined individually by each chapter.

Which fraternity or sorority will I be in?

K-State’s process of mutual selection guarantees you’ll find the chapter that’s right for you. Potential sorority members will visit all sorority houses during recruitment week. Potential fraternity members will contact the houses they are interested in to find out about recruitment events. Men can sign with a fraternity as early as April. Women will be invited to join sororities on the last day of recruitment week in August.

If I join, will I have time to do other activities?

Definitely. Greek organizations strive to make their members well-rounded individuals. K-State Greeks are involved in sports, clubs, service, and more. In fact, while Greeks make up only about 18 percent of the undergraduate population at K-State, they fill about 65 percent of the campus leadership positions.

What kind of community service are Greeks involved with?

Chapters sponsor more than 60 service projects each year; one of these, Up 'Til Dawn, has raised almost a half a million dollars for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Will I get to live in the chapter house?

Most sororities do not have space immediately after recruitment, so plan on finding other housing before coming to K-State. Most freshmen live in the residence halls and then move into their chapter houses sophomore year. Many fraternities allow freshmen to live in, but you might want to sign up for the residence halls just in case. If you decide to live in house, you can get out of your residence hall contract by paying a cancellation fee. This fee varies depending on how late in the summer you cancel, so make sure to review your contract carefully.
