Here’s your first college math lesson. Two college students plus all their stuff equals one crowded room. Fortunately, you can maximize your space with a few simple tricks.

Loft

A loft will create space under your bed for a desk or couch. Lofting both beds frees up almost the entire floor for seating and entertainment.

Pack lightly

We know you’re really attached to that fur parka you got last Christmas, but you probably won’t need it in August. You’ll save room in your closet by bringing up your clothes by season. Don’t worry, you can trade out your shorts for sweaters over Thanksgiving break.

Seating

People will always flock to a room with plenty of seating. If your beds are lofted, you’ll have plenty of space for a couch or chairs underneath. Keeping a few collapsible or novelty chairs stowed away is another good idea.

Color

You can’t paint the walls, but that doesn’t mean you can’t inject plenty of color into your room. A little color goes a long way to liven up your living space.

Carpet

Carpet not only brings in color, but it covers up the cold tile, too. Buy a few yards from a carpet store or just sew together some remnants. A K-State rug will also do the trick.

Posters

You can’t paint the walls, but you can cover them with all your favorite bands, cartoons, and movies. Posters are the one thing light enough to hang on the walls without damaging them.

Every room has a window with blinds, but curtains can add your personal style to the room. Whether it’s an African print, a tie-dye sheet, or just neon orange, your curtains can show off your personality and breathe life into your room.

Lighting

What better way to brighten up your room than with lights? Lamps today come in more shapes and colors than ever before, and you can change them up even more with colored or decorative bulbs. Another cool idea is to line your room with rope lights. They provide just enough light to see your popcorn while you’re watching a late-night movie.

Entertainment

What makes the res hall experience great is the people you’ll meet. But even the greatest people in the world need something to do sometimes. Keep your wing entertained with these fun ideas.

Party games

If you’ve never seen your roommate try to imitate Cher, you’re missing out. Games like Cranium, Taboo, Pictionary, and Catch Phrase will bring out the silly side of your neighbors. If you don’t have any board games, even poker or pitch can be a riot with the right people.
